Susan Daughtrey Education 11+ Courses

Susan Daughtrey Education (SDE) offers a range of 11+ Courses and 11+ Mock Exams in several locations, including Amersham, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Bushey, Earley and Langley.

Our 11+ Courses are designed to prepare your child for the local 11+ exams in your area. This means that most of our 11+ Courses prepare students for the GL Assessment® 11+ tests, as GL are the official test provider in areas such as Buckinghamshire and Slough. Individual schools such as Kendrick School in Reading also use GL Assessment® 11+ tests. We cover all four 11+ subjects (English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning (VR), and Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR)).

We also offer bespoke 11+ Courses for candidates preparing for the 11+ exams in SW Herts (Maths and VR only, GL Assessment) and Reading School (FSCE format).

As SDE (Tuition) LLP is an Ofsted-registered childcare provider, at our Buckinghamshire and Langley Tuition Centres we accept Childcare Vouchers and Tax-Free Childcare payments saving you at least 20% on the SDE 11+ Course fees.

This is useful for revision, allowing you as a parent to see the content covered in class as well as the teaching methods employed. Features of all Susan Daughtrey Education Courses

The vast majority of the in-class 11+ Course resources have been written in-house by SDE specifically for the SDE 11+ Courses.


SDE's 11+ Courses comprise the following features:

  • Courses designed for specific local 11+ tests in the respective Course area.
  • Classes conducted by fully qualified teachers, who are also subject-area 11+ tutors, with detailed and standardised lesson plans. The vast majority of class materials are specially written for the Course and are unpublished.
  • Regular 'mini tests' at the beginning of the class to assess progress in Vocabulary, Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning.
  • Homework review period to give the teacher the opportunity to tackle common problem areas before teaching the lesson’s new topics.
  • All teachers are carefully selected based on their teaching skills, experience and reputation.
  • Emphasis on a technique-oriented approach, teaching students how to approach each type of question which we expect may appear in the 11+ exams.
  • Interactive teacher-student group work in class to provide an engaging dynamic classroom environment and to practise and reinforce problem-solving skills. The teacher will often guide the students through several worked examples before the students get an opportunity to complete some further questions independently. The teacher will then provide the answers and review the more challenging questions with the class.

Types of Courses we Offer

We offer 11+ Foundation Courses for Year 4 students, comprehensive Year 5 11+ Courses and Summer Courses. We also offer additional short 11+ Refresher Courses and targeted 11+ Workshops for students who are attending the SDE Year 5 11+ Course.

Year 4 11+ Foundation Course

  • The Foundation Course is created for 11+ candidates in Year 4 at school. This Course is specifically designed to establish the required academic foundations for children who plan to progress to the full SDE 11+ Course in Year 5.
  • The aim of the Year 4 11+ Foundation Course is to improve personal performance and enhance skills for the SDE 11+ Year 5 Course, focusing on core English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills.
  • The Year 4 Foundation Course offers weekly tuition, assessments, and utilises Susan Daughtrey MEd's structured lesson plans and materials. It includes fully interactive Hybrid Classroom technology, weekly pre-recorded video tutorials, and regular homework assignments.
  • There is a Year 4 Foundation Course available in three formats: a 17-Week Course, a 30-Week Course and a 36-Week Course. The 17-Week Course offers a total of 25 1/2 hours of tuition across 17 lessons, the 30-Week Course provides 45 hours of tuition over 30 lessons and the 36-Week Course (by far our most popular Foundation Course option) is 54 hours of tuition over 36 weeks, offering a more in-depth coverage and further practice.

Year 5 11+ Course and Recommended Extras

  • The SDE 11+ Course is designed for students preparing for the final 11+ tests and includes 32 two-hour lessons and is a full programme of 11+ preparation.
  • The Course features regular assessments, two 11+ Mini Mocks, a formal 11+ Mock Exam session and weekly-set homework.
  • All class and homework resources are included, and students have access to interactive Hybrid Classroom technology and weekly pre-recorded video tutorials as standard.
  • Our Year 5 11+ Course is further enhanced by various optional extras. These optional packages include up to six additional 11+ Mock Exams, a 10 ½ hour Refresher Course at the end of August (just before the final 11+ exams) and a subject specific 8-hour 11+ Workshop to support your child in their weakest 11+ subject, all designed to refine techniques and strengthen knowledge.

Year 5 Summer Course

  • The Summer Course is tailored for students who have spent the past year (or longer) preparing for the 11+ exam, whether through self-study with their parent, 1-2-1 tutoring, or by attending an 11+ Course with another provider.
  • It offers a concise, professionally structured program led by top-quality teachers, utilising exclusive, unpublished SDE resources specifically for Year 5 11+ candidates.
  • The Summer Course is ideal for reinforcing and refining their preparation with expert guidance.
  • The final two days of the week’s Summer Course include two sets of Susan Daughtrey 11+ Practice Tests which are completed and then reviewed together in class (in addition to other work which is also undertaken on these days). These tests are different to the entirely separate SDE 11+ Mock Exams.

Our Homework

  • To follow each of our term-time classes, children receive a Parent Homework Pack™ (PHP) and Student Homework Pack™ (SHP) containing a homework list and answers to Susan's homework exercises.
  • The SHP includes the homework list as well as a number of the week's assignments.
  • Students are also referred to various published books provided in an SDE-branded Prep Bag™ at the beginning of the Course.
  • Homework is tailored to practise topics taught in the previous class, as well as regular vocabulary, comprehension and mental arithmetic exercises.
  • Year 4 Foundation Course students typically spend about 2-3 hours per week completing their homework, while Year 5 students are expected to take 3-5 hours.
  • Extra homework is provided during key holiday periods to provide for continued practice and consolidation.
  • All homework is provided in hard copy format to simulate the written test environment, avoiding online platforms to prevent habits unsuitable for paper-pencil tests, for example where students may be inclined to attempt complex Maths questions without writing down their workings.

The SDE 11+ Tuition Centre in Amersham was purpose built for SDE in 2023 and is located approximately 100 meters from Amersham Railway Station. There are three bespoke classrooms (two of which can be combined to form an Exam Hall), a staff room and 8 onsite parking spaces at the rear of the building, adjacent to the main entrance.

The SDE 11+ Tuition Centre premises in Beaconsfield can be found in the centre of Beaconsfield New Town, approximately 250 metres from Beaconsfield Railway Station. There are three bespoke SDE 11+ classrooms (two of which can be combined to form an Exam Hall) and the SDE Head Office is located on the 2nd floor above the Tuition Centre. There is a large car park (Penncroft) adjacent to the building.

The self-contained SDE 11+ Tuition Centre in Gerrards Cross consists of two bespoke SDE 11+ classrooms and can be found in the heart of the Town Centre, approximately 100 metres from Gerrards Cross Railway Station. There are several car parks nearby.<br> This premises is due to open in Summer 2024 and will replace SDE’s use of CSP Community Centre, where SDE 11+ classes have been held for the last 34 years.
