Experience

I have over 50 years of experience as a teacher and I have taught all the curriculum subjects to Primary age children throughout Key Stages 1 and 2 from Year 1 up to Year 6 in both State and Independent schools. I have also taught verbal and non-verbal reasoning at Year 6 level and overseen mock 11 plus exams.  These schools were located in Birmingham, Bedfordshire, London Borough of Hillingdon and Buckinghamshire.

I have held various posts of responsibility including Head of Department, Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator and Head of Junior School. I have been a mentor to newly qualified teachers, overseen the pastoral care of children and Staff, interviewed prospective Staff and worked closely with the other senior managers.

I have also written, monitored and updated schemes of work for different curriculum subjects and year groups and overseen the implementation of these within the school. I have organised workshops for Gifted and Talented pupils, inviting neighbouring schools to attend. In addition, I have experience suporting children who have special educational needs, developing strategies for their learning in consultation with an educational psychologist.

In my role as a class teacher, I have used data to identify pupils who are underachieving and where necessary, implemented action plans to support them.

I was part of the Senior Management team in my last role and therefore, I was involved in major decisions affecting school life.  I had the responsibility of running the Junior School department and making sure that a high standard of teaching and learning was maintained whilst providing effective leadership.  I worked collaboratively with other members of Staff to ensure the best outcomes for the pupils.

Although I retired as a full time teacher, I continued to work at school in a part time role before joining SDE.
